Jay Jody Unpacks How New Single “Naledi” With Blaklez & Miss Ready Came About. South African rapper Jay Jody has opened up about the creative process behind “Naledi”, the latest single from Cool & Black, his collaborative project with fellow rapper Blaklez. The track brings together the two MCs with talented vocalist Miss Ready, with production handled by Junior and mixing and mastering by Chris Owan.
According to Jay Jody, the song began with a beat selected by Blaklez, who brought Junior’s production into the mix. “I would like to give a shout-out to Blaklez for choosing that beat. It’s a Junior beat, which is the same guy who produced Gemstones. Yeah, man, he sent me that beat, and I immediately agreed that, yeah, we should do something to this,” Jay Jody explained.
From there, the record developed organically in the studio. Jay Jody recalled that he and Blaklez first laid down their verses before Miss Ready arrived and added the hook that helped shape the song.
“I think we both laced our verses, and then Miss Ready pulled up with a fire hook,” he said.
The collaboration also marked Jay Jody and Miss Ready’s first meeting. Rather than needing time to find a creative rhythm, the artists quickly connected during what Jay Jody described as a studio camp.
“She pulled through. She did her thing, man. It was the first time we met her, and we just vibed. We clicked. We made dope music,” he recalled.
What makes “Naledi” even more intriguing is that the session apparently produced more than one song. Jay Jody revealed that the chemistry between the artists resulted in additional music being created, hinting that their collaboration could extend beyond the latest Cool & Black release.
“There’s actually more music, you know, that we cooked up with her,” he added.
For Jay Jody, “Naledi” is therefore the product of a collaborative process that came together through the right beat, strong chemistry and an open-ended studio session. With Blaklez setting the process in motion, Junior providing the production and Miss Ready adding her vocal presence, the single captures the spontaneous energy that can emerge when artists connect creatively for the first time.
