SAMA32: Echoes of Heritage, Rhythms of Tomorrow

As we stand just one day away from Heritage Day, we celebrate the musical tapestry of our nation. Established in 1995, the South African Music Awards have consistently honoured our sonic history. At SAMA32, we witnessed how deeply our heritage genres have evolved, seamlessly blending our rich history with modern innovation.

The Best Contemporary Faith Album category highlights our spiritual roots. At SAMA1, the legendary Rebecca Malope laid the foundation with her monumental release, Shwele Baba.

Today, the genre has evolved from traditional gospel into a vibrant, modern spiritual experience, brilliantly championed by SAMA32 winner HLE for her uplifting album, The Ground We’re On.

Dance music is the undeniable heartbeat of South Africa. In the Best Dance Album category, Joe Nina captured the early township energy of the 90s, winning at SAMA2 with Joy. He then gave us a stellar performance at SAMA24.

Since then, local dance music has transformed into a global electronic powerhouse, an evolution perfectly represented by SAMA32 winners Jazzwrld and Thukuthela for their pulsating collaborative album, The Most Wanted.

Maskandi remains the organic storytelling soul of Zulu heritage. At SAMA7, Bhekumuzi Luthuli’s iconic Phaphiyosi won Best Maskandi Album by preserving deep traditional picking styles.

The genre now seamlessly blends indigenous roots with contemporary production, a shift proudly showcased by SAMA32 winner Mzukulu with his acclaimed self-titled release, Mzukulu.

Then we head into South African jazz which has a profound history of capturing the soul and resilience of our people. At SAMA4, the genre’s incredible depth was on full display when Winston Mankunku Ngozi won Best Traditional Jazz Album for his classic Molo Africa.

Today, that same spirit of deep musical healing and storytelling continues to evolve, beautifully embodied by SAMA32 winner Mandisi Dyantys, who claimed the award for his masterful project, Intlambululo Ukuhlambulula.

As we conclude our Heritage Month series and step into Heritage Day tomorrow, we are reminded that South African music is not just entertainment, it is a living, breathing archive of our collective journey.

From the pioneering legends who laid the foundations in the 90s to the visionaries driving SAMA32, our sonic legacy continues to grow, adapt and unite us.

Let us carry these rhythms forward, honouring the icons who paved the way while celebrating the new voices writing our next chapter.
